About Chairlift
Frequenting late-night jazz shows at the strange Broker Inn on the outskirts of Boulder, CO, three students are mystified by the 1980's faux-gothic architecture. The oak-cabinet aquariums, vacant dancefloors, fake trees and velveteen booths inspires the ideal hypothetical setting for a new breed of pop music. Intent on making music for haunted houses, Caroline Polachek, Aaron Pfenning, and Patrick Wimberly form Chairlift in the summer of 2006. With a move to Williamsburg Brooklyn in 2007, the trio starts playing shows with thriving experimental pop magicians like MGMT, Yeasayer and Mixel Pixel. The Chairlift sound develops into a hypnotic, yet tongue-in-cheek style of synth pop. The first single "Evident Utensil," an ode to pencils, personifies this quirkiness. Brooklyn's Kanine Records (Grizzly Bear, Professor Murder) releases the single, which quickly garners praise: the NME call it "a charming pop oddity," Exclaim! give it "immediate cult status," and RCRDLBL.com deem it "the best single from a Brooklyn band since like TV on the Radio or something." Comparisons are made to The Knife, Art of Noise, Of Montreal, and Yaz(!). In the meantime, Chairlift is busy recording their debut album "Does You Inspire You," on late nights and weekends, while touring with MGMT, Yeasayer and Mixel Pixel whenever possible. With the album finished, and all three graduated, Chairlift's schedule is booked for the rest of year; there is a lot of ground to cover between Colorado and Brooklyn.
